retro-eateries-2016

It’s easy to think that Las Vegas has a mentality of out with the old, in with the new. In the last 10 years, we’ve said our goodbyes to historic hotels and casinos like The Sahara, Stardust and most recently, The Riviera. Our farewells to these Las Vegas classics often end with an extravagant closing ceremony with bursting fireworks and implosions viewed by thousands of fans and spectators that hope to catch their last glimpse of the property. Luckily, remnants of the Rat Pack era and midcentury Vegas glitz and glamor still exist.

Peppermill

The Peppermill has been a Las Vegas strip favorite since it’s opening in 1972. The restaurant is decorated in tropical casino decor filled with purple tinted mirror and soft velvet booths. The portions are huge, the price is reasonable and the service is 24 hours. The location is perfect for club goers and after hours crowds coming from mega clubs, Tryst and Surrender which is located at the Wynn and Encore next door. Don’t forget to get a round of drinks before dinner at The Fireside Lounge, we suggest getting the tiki cocktails!

Golden Steer

At the corner of Sahara and Las Vegas Boulevard you’ll find a legendary place in an insignificant strip mall. You’ll see a retro bright yellow marquee that reads “The Golden Steer”. Since 1952, the Golden Steer has been a classic meat, potatoes and all the trimmings kind of steakhouse. It’s an old haunt of the late and great 1950’s entertainers, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Till this day, they still live by their trademark, “The best steaks on earth”.

Huntridge Pharmacy & Soda Fountain

Pharmacies and comfort food used to be a trend in the restaurant and health industry in the 1950’s. A time and place where you can get your prescriptions and a grab a hearty meal to follow was not uncommon. Huntridge Pharmacy & Soda Fountain is the only place in Nevada that exists with this super combo. They even kept their 1950’s ambience intact! If you are a lover of midcentury architecture and all American food, this is a must see and eat. We hear the Oreo milkshakes are amazing too.
